Ken Lantis
Lantis Fireworks was founded in 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa by Merl Lantis. Built to entertain a country after the second World War, Merl taught his son, Ken, everything he knew about fireworks and how to entertain with exciting pyrotechnic displays.
In 1975, Ken took his knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit out west. He and his family packed up and followed his pioneering instinct. Settling in Salt Lake City, Lantis Fireworks found its new headquarters, where it remains as the oldest and most decorated professional fireworks display company in the Mountain West.
The Lantis family, spearheaded by Ken, has been the authority in all fireworks and pyrotechnical displays in the Mountain West for over 45 years. Utilizing the core principles of safety – for our employees, customers, and the public at large – and an undying desire to provide the best service and experience for his customers, it’s clear why Ken is widely considered the leader in the pyrotechnic and entertainment industry in Utah, Nevada, Alaska, and Idaho.
Achievements & Innovations
Ken Lantis was instrumental in working with Utah lawmakers to help establish legislation resulting in the Utah State Pyrotechnician’s Licensing program. He developed and implemented Utah’s first private safety training program for pyrotechnicians with the help of the American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) and the approval of the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Initially starting in Utah, Lantis Productions, Inc. has since expanded its operations to include production shows and pyrotechnician safety training classes in Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming.
Lantis Fireworks continues to hold pyrotechnics safety training classes throughout their territory. Willingness to learn and be safety conscious is the only price of attendance. Ken believes that whether the attendees work for Lantis or not, a well-trained safety-minded pyro is an asset to the industry as a whole and is more important than who writes the pyro his paycheck.
Christmas In The Nighttime Sky
What was once a dream of Ken Lantis’ and a few friends to bring communities together to celebrate the reasons for the season, and to help those who need it most, has evolved into a 31–year annual event entitled “Christmas in the Nighttime Sky.”
Every year around Thanksgiving, hundreds of families join together in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, and Nevada to celebrate the holidays with traditional caroling, festive food and beverage.
Although every part of this celebration is special in its own right, it’s the arrival of Santa to gather all the donated gifts from the participants that are then delivered to the areas’ less fortunate children and families – which is the crowning event and highlight of the celebration.
